Happy NEW YEAR….Wait, What?!

How many times have you seen or heard the headline…it’s back to school. Too many times right? Well its finally here, families are already trying to get into a new routine, and the one thing I noticed when chatting with patients, family and friends this week was the concept of New year resolutions! Yes, you heard right, many people are talking about weight loss, hitting the gym, cutting out sugar …. things that I would only expect to hear about on January 1st. But, this does make sense. As the kids are settling into a new school year, it is also a great time to think about your family’s routine, dietary habits, social habits and of course weight management. You’re kids are kicking off a new year, setting new goals so why not get the whole family involved.

Here are a few tips from me to help you set the new year off right:

1. Make sleep a priority – sleep is one of the best ways to get back into a routine, so even if you can’t get your kids to eat their green vegetables at the dinner table and make healthier food choices, it’s okay.
Healthy eating takes time so work on the easy stuff first, such as sleep. Focus on getting kids into bed at a reasonable time and stick to it every night, no matter what. It’s great for your kids and you too! #selfcaretime

2. Need healthy lunch or snack options? These are a few of the websites I use for inspiration. Check them out for some beyond the lunchbox ideas:

3. Prep the night before! This is so helpful and makes your morning just a little bit easier to get through. I do simple things like fill up my kettle with water, put my tea cup and mug out of the counter top with the sieve nearby, store my lunch in my lunch bag so that all I have to do is grab and go. It might seem like minutia but this stuff takes minutes off a rushed morning.

4. Start paying attention to your immune system. As the season is transitioning its way into fall and the kids are back in school, your immune system may need a little attention, especially if your kids are attending daycare all the way up to kindergarten. Remember to encourage hand washing, slowly start adding fall-friendly meals (did someone say pumpkin), and ask your ND for the right immune-boosting herbs for your body. ONWC will be running an immune booster clinic beginning in late September so stay tuned for details.

Good luck with all those New Year Resolutions!
